Abstract

The destruction of precious documents of the Aragonese Chancellery of Naples during the Second World War still penalizes the studies on the musical patronage of Alfonso the Magnanimous. This article examines some sources preserved in the Archive of the Kingdom of Valencia, drawn up by the scribes of the general treasurer, the prothonotary, and the secretary of the Royal House in a chronological span from 1441 to 1447. These sources, which have not yet been used by musicologists, not only broaden our knowledge of the individual biographies and professional skills of the court musicians – singers of the chapel, string instrument players, cantadors, wind band and trumpets – but also shed new light on the set of measures and gratifications that the Aragonese sovereign reserved for musicians who did not belong to the Royal House.
