The “Francesco Masciangelo” Centre for Musical Documentation and Research of Lanciano has begun publishing the critical edition of Ippolito Sabino’s First Book of Madrigals for Five Voices, a project that has received the patronage of the SIdM.

The volume, the fourth in the Masciangelo Centre series published by Bongiovanni of Bologna, consists of 192 pages, including the critical edition of the madrigals, the critical edition of the poetic texts and critical apparatus, biographical information on the Sabino family and on Ippolito in particular, analyses of the madrigals, and a complete catalogue of the composer’s works.

The critical edition has been prepared by Alberto Mammarella; the introductory texts are signed not only by Mammarella himself, but also by Vincenzo Borghetti and Gianfranco Miscia. This initiative opens a new phase in the rediscovery of the Abruzzese composer, who is known within musicological circles but for whom, until now, no musical editions had been available that would allow a critical assessment of his work.

The first volume of the Madrigals thus inaugurates the Opera Omnia of Ippolito Sabino—published under the patronage of the SIdM—which will include the seven volumes printed during his lifetime as well as the compositions that appeared in other collections.

On 29 August 2009, at the Church of San Biagio in Lanciano (Chieti), the volume Ippolito Sabino, First Book of Madrigals for Five Voices (first edition 1570), critical edition by Alberto Mammarella, with texts by Vincenzo Borghetti, Alberto Mammarella, and Gianfranco Miscia, Bologna, Edizioni Bongiovanni, 2007 (Opera Omnia, vol. I), published under the patronage of the SIdM, was presented.

Speakers included G. Miscia and A. Mammarella, editor of the volume. The event concluded with a performance of selected pieces by Ippolito Sabino by the Gruppo Vocale Magellensis.
