Call for papers: 10th “Le Musiciste” Symposium, 26 and 27 March 2026

Women Composers and Applied Music – Roma Tre University
Department of Educational Sciences, Department of Philosophy, Communication and Performing Arts Roma Tre Teatro Palladium Foundation

The artistic and social identity of women musicians has long remained on the margins of European music historiography. Yet many women were leading figures, highly respected professionals, and perceptive witnesses of their own time. While some enjoyed the privilege of being born into aristocratic or musical families and of receiving a musical education, and others were able to express themselves creatively in convents or in socially progressive contexts, many were unable to give full expression to their genius. The prohibition against performing in public once married, the exclusion from musical offices and careers reserved for men, and the absence of public institutions offering educational paths equal to those available to the opposite sex led to the obscuring of many exceptionally gifted women and to the disappearance of their artistic legacy from collective memory. The study day that Roma Tre University dedicates to this subject on an annual basis, now in its tenth edition, seeks to contribute to the rediscovery of these figures and their forgotten stories.

The conference Le Musiciste is promoted by the Department of Educational Sciences, the Department of Philosophy, Communication and Performing Arts of Roma Tre University, and the Roma Tre Teatro Palladium Foundation, under the patronage of the Italian Society of Musicology, the Italian Sociological Association, Gender Studies Section, and GIO (Interuniversity Centre for Gender Studies).

Conceived by Prof. Milena Gammaitoni (Professor of General Sociology, Department of Educational Sciences), the study days are organized in collaboration with the Scientific Committee composed of Prof. Luca Aversano (Director of the Department of Philosophy, Communication and Performing Arts, Roma Tre), Prof. Orietta Caianiello (Professor of Chamber Music at the “N. Piccinni” Conservatory of Bari), and Prof. Bianca M. Antolini (Società Editrice di Musicologia).

The conference will take place over two days: on 26 March, from 2:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., in the main hall of the Rectorate of Roma Tre University, Via Ostiense 133; and on 27 March, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Department of Educational Sciences, Via Principe Amedeo 184. On 26 March at 8:00 p.m., a concert devoted to chamber works by women composers will be offered at the Teatro Palladium, within walking distance of the Rectorate.
