The Italian Society of Musicology (SIdM) establishes the SIdM Award, conferred on the best theses in musicological disciplines defended at Italian and foreign universities and conservatories. The prize will consist of the publication of the dissertation in the SIdM/Anthology Digital Publishing series “Percorsi.”
1. Eligibility requirements
Participation in the 2024 edition of the competition is reserved for SIdM members who have defended a specialist/master’s degree thesis (or single-cycle degree thesis) at any Italian or foreign university, or a second-level academic diploma thesis at any conservatory of music or equivalent foreign institution.
Provided that the thesis falls within the musicological or ethnomusicological field (an indispensable condition for participation in the competition), there are no chronological or repertorial restrictions on the subject treated.
The 2024 edition of the competition is open to theses defended no earlier than the 2020–21 academic year.
2. Procedures and deadline for submitting the application
The application for participation in the competition must be submitted no later than 30 April 2024 to the following addresses:

Please specify “Premio SIdM 2024” in the subject line of the email.
The application, in plain form (Annex 1), must contain the following information:
- first and last name
- personal details of the applicant
- title of the thesis
- date and place of the defense
- email address to be used exclusively for all communications relating to this call, and telephone number
Under penalty of exclusion, the following documentation must be attached to the application:
- copy of the thesis in PDF format, conforming to the original
- copy of the degree certificate or second-level academic diploma certificate, or equivalent qualification obtained abroad
- sworn declaration in lieu of affidavit stating that the copy of the thesis sent to the SIdM Award committee conforms to the original (Annex 2)
- sworn declaration in lieu of affidavit stating that the thesis is unpublished (Annex 3)
- copy of a valid identity document
- undertaking to produce, in the event of winning the prize, a final revised version of the work ready for publication no later than 31 May 2025 (Annex 4)
Applications that do not fully satisfy the required conditions will not be taken into consideration.
Participation in the competition entails full acceptance of these regulations.
3. Obligations of participants
By participating in the competition, applicants authorize the dissemination, through the press or through SIdM social media channels, of all information relating to the awarding of the SIdM Prize, as well as of various extracts from the thesis and/or the subsequent monograph for promotional purposes. The publishing copyright of the monograph shall belong to the publisher and may not be transferred to third parties.
It is the responsibility of the author to ensure that the use of images, data, and illustrations in the chapters does not infringe copyright law, and that authorization to reproduce them has been obtained from the holders of any relevant rights.
4. The SIdM Award
The prize shall consist of the publication of the winning thesis in the SIdM/Anthology Digital Publishing series “Percorsi.”
5. Procedure for awarding the prize
The prize shall be awarded, through a selection process based on peer review, by an evaluation committee appointed by the SIdM Executive Board and composed of scholars from the disciplinary fields relevant to the theses received. Notice of the appointment of the committee and of its members will be published on the SIdM website.
The evaluation will be based on the degree of innovation and originality, and on the scholarly perspectives and impact of the thesis submitted.
The evaluation committee reserves the right not to award the prize if, in its sole judgment, the submissions do not reach an adequate qualitative standard.
The committee’s decision is final.
The winner will receive notification of the award by email, at the address indicated in the application.
The outcome of the selection will also be published on the SIdM website.
