The series spans a deliberately defined chronological period and aims to promote the Italian instrumental repertoire and some of the figures who created it, giving priority to unknown works or, where they are already known, to pieces not currently available in a critical edition. The selected composers were highly regarded and widely admired in their own time: Viotti (1755–1824) and Rolla (1757–1841), devoted almost exclusively to instrumental music, made a substantial contribution to the enhancement and development of violin technique, both actively engaged as celebrated and acclaimed performers, each within a clearly defined geographical sphere; Saverio Mercadante (1795–1870), renowned above all for his operatic catalogue, also took a considerable interest in instrumental music, especially during his formative years at the conservatory in Naples and occasionally during the period in which he served as director of the same institution. Paris, London, Milan, Parma and Naples are the cultural epicentres from which the series emerges, and it is on these artistic capitals that attention will be focused. Each edition is intended to offer not only a reliable version of the musical composition, examining its purely performative, stylistic and formal aspects, but also an in-depth exploration of the sociological and cultural issues connected to the various contexts in which this repertoire circulated and was appreciated. The editorial plan provides for the publication of two volumes per year.
